Notes on Jolly Jones (Jane Blaylock)

NOTES on Jolly Jones angelaharlan55added this on 25 May 2009 Since no one can read my notes unless I give you permission to my site I am including them here. If we don't share the data how are we ever going to find the links? MARRIAGE: Caldwell County, Kentucky marriages lists July 28, 1809 Polly CRIDER m. Jolly JONES BOOK: "Sketches of Alabama Jones Valley, Vol. 2" by Mary Gordon Duffee 1937 in the chapter titled "Pioneer Days" page. 223/224 states "From all I can learn, it is my belief that John Jones came from Greenville, district S.C.. In a letter received from Dr. Andrew Jones of Amity, Clark Co. Ark., and dated Dec. 18, 1886, in reference to my sketches of the valley, then being published in the Birmingham Age/Herold, he says "As my ancestors were the settlers of that valley, and gave it its name, of course it would be interesting to me. The stories of my father and grandfather are yet fresh in my memory about the stirring times in the settlement there. John Jones and Mr. Roupe settled there in 1816. This John Jones was a cousin of my grandfather and wore the unenviable name of "Devil John" to distinguish him from many others of the same name, and because of his wild habits. My grandfather went there in 1817,(this is reference of one Andrew Jones)) and lived there six years , some Indians being there at the time. Some years after his settlement he was followed by his brother, Jolly JONES, who settled near Tuscaloosa, and lived and died there." NOTES: Researcher, Bobbie Jones McLean clarifies that Dr. Andrew Jones(above), is actually Dr. Alfred Jones, son of Robert and grandson of Pioneer, Andrew JONES BOOK: ALABAMA RECORDS Tuscaloosa County Vol. 109 by Katheleen Paul Jones and Pauline Jones Gandrud page. 17/18: Estate papers 1859-60 page. 428 Jolly JONES' estate. I have not verified this yet. Notes from gedcom g214.ftw: Letter from Mrs. Elmer J. Jones, Rt. 2, Box 125, Broken Arrow, OK 74012, dated May 26, 1977, says that his will names Daniel Jones of MS. Estate settled in 1860. He names two brothers, John and Andrew. A Jolly Jones married Caroline Herring on October 06, 1858 at home of her father, who consents (Jolly is of age), Tuscaloosa Co., AL. This would have been Jolly Jones, Jr. who was born in 1833 in Tuscaloosa, AL. ID: I0002 Name: Jolly JONES Sex: M Birth: 1788 in SC Death: 1866 in TUSCALOOSA, Al Note: JOLLY JONES. During the summer of 1990 I was searching through some old Geonealogical Helper issues where I found an inquiry that included Joneses of Pontotoc Co., Miss. So I wrote to Ceilia McCallister Shafer of Okla. who made the inquiry Mar-Apr 1977 issue hoping the letter would be answered. She had in the meantime been divorced, remarried and moved to Belton, Texas by this time but the letter was forwarded to her new address, my good fortune. A couple months later I received a letter from Ceilia McCallister (Shafer) Stratton who mailed me information on Andrew Jolly Jones and wife Rebecca Box my g-g-g's. Andrew is the father of Ceilia's g-g-g grandfather Willis Jones who is the brother of Caswell Jones who is my g-g grandfather. At that time my records only included Caswell Jones and his wife Ellinor. This is proof that inquiries are very helpful in the search for ancestors. In this case her inquiry helped me instead of helping her. I have some information on my Jones branch and she has information on her Jones branch which helped me tie into the main Jones branch. It is not easy to research Joneses or Millers. Ceilia also provided me information on her family and five siblings of Caswell Jones. Andrew's and Rebecca's names were given to Ceilia by her grandmother Poteet. JOLLY HAD TWO BROTHERS, ANDREW AND JOHN. JOLLY'S FIRST NAME WAS NOT ANDREW.(fwh). On 14 Oct 1992 I answered a query of Mrs. Dewey C. Whitenton, Rte 5, Box 230, Bolivar, TN 38008 (Margaret"Marne"Whitenton) who was inquiring about her John Jones Line. She could not answer my question about Jolly Jones but she referred my letter to her cousin Doyle D. Jones, 1502 Ventura, Midland, TX 79705, who later send me some information for which I am very appreciative. Mrs Whitenton also sent me charts on her John Jones Line which has been very helpful. Andrew Jones father is another John Jones but may be related to their John Jones. DOYLE D. JONES SHOWS JOLLY JONES b 1788 SC. Jolly moved from Livingston or Caldwell Co. KY to Tuscaloosa Co. AL where he died 1866. He was a Justice of the Peace there and there are many records on his family there. Jolly married Polly Crider 23 July 1809 in Livingston Co., KY. ++ this information does not agree with Ceilia M. Stratton. Doyle D. Jones researched Andrew & Jolly Jones Line to unravel the confusion on his John Jones Line between the two and has generously provided some bits of information which confirms Andrew & Jolley Jones' Father and Mother. Doyle D. Jones referred me to Mrs. Aliese C. Johnson, 11500 Francis Drive, Sterling Heights, MI 48077--he said she was working on her husbands ancestor Caswell Jones. I immediately wrote to Mrs. Johnson and just yesterday received a package of information on the research her husband, Charles Winford Johnson, has recorded. Her information contradicts Ceilia M. Stratton on the father of Caswell Jones. Mrs. Johnson's information records Caswell's father as Thomas G. Jones and his mother as Jane Caudill.(not proven-not true fwh). (Caswell's parents are Andrew and Rebecca Jones. fwh). The research now begins to prove which of these are Caswell's true parents. ACCORDING TO DOYLE D. JONES. JOLLY MARRIED POLLY CRIDER 23 JULY 1809 IN LIVINGSTON CO., KY, SECURITY WAS DANIEL CRIDER AND THOMAS D. BENNETT. JOLLY AND HIS FAMILY MOVED FROM LAURENS CO. SC TO LIVINGSTON CO., KY IN 1805 THEN, MOVED TO TUSCALOOSA CO.,AL WITH OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS WHERE HE LIVED FOR AWHILE IN FAYETTE CO.,AL BUT SETTLED IN TUSCALOOSA CO.,AL WHERE HE DIED ABOUT 1866. ========= My research: 1837 tax list and probate records by Maggie Hubbard Sudduth.
